Kenosha, WI

In 1850, the citizens of the Village of Southport petitioned the State Legislature to charter a new city and adopted a variation of the name, Kenozia (meaning "pike") given by the
Potawatomi peoples of this area, for the city's name.   Kenosha had about 3,400 residents at that time.

Today, Kenosha's population in the City limits is about 95,000. Keith G. Bosman is the City's Mayor.  Aldermen represent the City's 17 districts.

Kenosha is located along Lake Michigan, near the Illinois border, between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois.   Kenosha has many parks, two public swimming pools, the oldest operating velodrome (bicycle racing track) in the United States, plenty of places to fish, several museums (Kenosha Public Museum, Dinosaur Discovery Museum, Kenosha History Center and--opening March 2008--Civil War Museum), public library branches, an electric streetcar line on its lakefront, performing arts and music programs in its schools, historic buildings, including the 1866 Southport Light Station, a METRA commuter train station with service to Chicago, and much more.  To learn more about Kenosha, visit www.kenoshacvb.com.     For information on City of Kenosha government, visit www.kenosha.org   For information on County of Kenosha government, visit www.co.kenosha.wi.us
